Coming Fall 2023
An Action Group is a humanistic and action-oriented method of group psychotherapy. It encourages spontaneity and creativity in the many roles of our lives. (If you fear you are not sufficiently spontaneous or creative, this does not rule you out; it means this might really help you!)
Just as there’s more to good therapy than “just talk,” there can be more to good group therapy than merely talking in a group.
In an Action Group, we don’t merely tell, we show. Participants engage with each other as they share situations in their lives experientially, facilitated by the group leader. We’ll explore our stories, heal old wounds, and witness each other’s dreams, as we help one another move forward with courage.
Each meeting, after an ample warm-up, a group member volunteers to engage in a concrete piece of personal work. This often involves enacting scenes from one’s life — past, present or future, real or imagined. Participants support each other through playing the roles of the other people in that person’s life, or perhaps conflicted aspects of their psyche.
Don’t worry — we’re going to get you plenty warmed up before you do any of this, and nobody is ever forced to reveal anything about themselves they aren’t comfortable sharing.
After the action comes the sharing, where all participants are encouraged to find identification with some aspect of the action. Almost everybody does, every time.
Using powerful Action methods, you will share your experiences in a way that can lead to tremendous healing, along with the kind of camaraderie you might associate with being on a sports team or in a musical ensemble. We work hard, together, to understand one another and ourselves. It’s a very beautiful thing.
No modality is right for everybody. But if it’s exciting to think of movement and embodiment as part of your growth, then this might just be for you.
The group meets for 2.5 hours a week, and costs $62.50/meeting. Members sign up for 12 meetings, and can rejoin for the next round of 12 if they wish.
