Person-Centered Therapy

8 Wednesdays, Starting January 20th. 10am to 12:30pm.

Client-Centered Therapy (later, Person-Centered Therapy) was the original humanistic therapy, founded by Dr. Carl Rogers in the 1940s. Based entirely around the inherent nature of the client, Rogers continued to research, develop, practice and teach this method until his death in 1987. He was joined by a great number of talented theorists, researchers and practitioners in developing this creative and optimistic approach, and Person-Centered therapy continues to thrive today (albeit mostly outside the USA).

Many contemporary therapists would endorse the Rogerian “core conditions” of authenticity, unconditional positive regard, and accurate empathy — even to the point of seeing these qualities as being obviously necessary for successful therapy. Yet these same therapists often don’t know where these ideas came from, or the theory and philosophy that underlies these principles.

Other therapists are under the mistaken impression that this form of therapy has been somehow superseded, or even “proven wrong.” Still others imagine that client-centered therapy is “easy,” or that it might function as a sort of dull but helpful prerequisite before commencing the “real” work of therapy — using other methods.

None of this is true.

Person-Centered therapy remains immensely powerful in the hands and hearts of anybody willing to learn its discipline. Far from being proven “wrong,” research continues to support the effects of Rogers’ principles on therapy outcomes. as well as the efficacy of Person-Centered Therapy itself.

There is much more to being a Person-Centered therapist than “being nice,” and “repeating what the client says,” as was the old caricature. There is, in fact, an intricate Person-Centered theory of how people come to suffer, and how they can be helped. Come learn it.
